THIS IS A FULL TIME POSITION
Under general supervision, performs manual and semi-skilled
maintenance work at assigned job sites including streets, parkways,
civic facilities, athletic facilities, aquatics facilities, and
parks. Provides direction to part-time staff in the completion of
maintenance assignments.

Must be at least 18 years old.
Knowledge of: The use and maintenance of basic power and hand
tools, equipment, materials, and methods used in building and
ground maintenance work. Related work hazards and safety
procedures. Operation of mower, trimmer, irrigation, and carpentry
equipment, and heavy-duty equipment such as backhoe and
tractor.
Ability to: Use and maintain basic power equipment, materials, hand
tools, and maintenance and automotive equipment. Perform manual
labor in a variety of weather conditions and perform work requiring
physical strength, dexterity, and endurance. Read, write, and carry
out oral and written instructions in English. Meet the physical
requirements stated in the City's Job Function Analysis for the
position, including ability to lift up to 75 lbs. Operate a motor
vehicle safely. Exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with
staff and the public. Utilize quality customer service skills and
techniques. Work different shifts including weekends, evenings, and
holidays.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Experience: One year of work experience in building maintenance,
custodial maintenance, street maintenance, landscape maintenance,
construction trades or related field as required.
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent is
required. Course work from an accredited institution in building
repair, public works, or a related field is highly desirable.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is
required.
Possession of a valid CPR, AED, First Aid certificate is required
within the first three months of employment.
Supplemental Information
Qualified applicants may be invited to participate in a written
exam and/or oral interview.
SALARY: Appointments are normally made at the first step of a five
step salary range. One year of City service is required to advance
to the next pay step in the salary range.
RETIREMENT PLAN: The City contributes toward a retirement plan
through the California Public Employees' Retirement System
(CalPERS). Applicants considered "classic" members would be
eligible for the 2.0% @ 55 CalPERS formula, applicants considered
"new members" of CalPERS would be eligible for the 2% @ 62 CalPERS
formula, in accordance with the Public Employees' Pension Reform
Act of 2013. The date of appointment and status of the applicant
will determine the retirement formula and the amount of the
employee contribution. Full-time employees do not participate in
Social Security.
VACATION: Full-time employees earn 80 hours of vacation per year
for the first five years of service; 120 hours per year after five
years of service; 128 hours in the 11th year; 136 hours in the 12th
year; 144 hours in the 13th year; 152 hours in the 14th year; and
160 hours in the 15th year and thereafter. Employees may accrue up
to a maximum of 350 vacation hours.
HOLIDAYS: Full-time employees receive 108 hours of paid holidays
per fiscal year. The City observes eleven fixed holidays throughout
the year. Any remaining hours are considered floating holiday hours
and may be taken at any time throughout the fiscal year. Holiday
hours do not accrue and do not carry over to the succeeding fiscal
year.
SICK LEAVE: Full-time employees earn 72 hours of sick leave per
calendar year. Employees leaving employment with the City who have
at least 5 years of service are compensated for 50% of their
accrued sick leave to a maximum of 720 hours.
MEDICAL INSURANCE: The City provides medical coverage through
CalPERS for all full-time employees and their dependents at no cost
to the employee. CalPERS offers medical programs which include HMO
and PPO plans. An employee who is covered under another medical
insurance program may choose to receive a cash rebate of up to $250
per month in lieu of insurance. Employee's retiring from service
with the City of La Mirada receive paid medical insurance into
retirement at no cost to the employee.
DENTAL INSURANCE: The City provides dental coverage for all
full-time employees and their dependents at no cost to the
employee. The City offers one PPO and one HMO dental plan.
VISION INSURANCE: The City provides vision coverage through VSP for
all full-time employees and their dependents at no cost to the
employee.
GYM MEMBERSHIP REIMBURSEMENT: The City provides a $100 per fiscal
year gym membership reimbursement for full-time employees.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: The City provides up to a $4,000 per fiscal
year tuition reimbursement for full-time employees.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT: The City provides full-time employees
with a flexible spending account program for eligible health and
dependent care expenses.
LIFE INSURANCE: The City provides a term life insurance program
based on twice the employee's annual salary up to a maximum of
$300,000 (management) and twice the employee's annual salary up to
$200,000 (non-management).
DISABILITY INSURANCE: Comprehensive short-term and long-term
disability plans are provided to all full-time employees at no cost
to the employee.
ALTERNATE WORK SCHEDULE: In most City departments, employees have
the opportunity to work a "9/80" alternate work schedule.
JURY DUTY: Full-time employees will receive up to 40 hours of jury
duty pay per calendar year while performing this service. At the
discretion of the City Manager, full-time employees who are
required to serve extended jury service beyond 40 hours in any one
calendar year may receive additional jury duty pay.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: The City participates in the ICMA-RC and the
Nationwide 457 deferred compensation plans, which are available to
full-time employees. The City provides a matching deferred
compensation contribution not to exceed $1,025 per full-time
employee per calendar year. To be eligible, the employee must
contribute an equal amount.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP): EAP Services are available to
all City employees at no cost. Services are contracted through
Standard Insurance and provided by Horizon Behavioral Services. EAP
services are available to employees and members of their
household.
DISCOUNTS: City employees are eligible for various program
discounts.
F&A Credit Union: City employees are eligible to join the
F&A Federal Credit Union.
